The Detroit Zoo is celebrating the birth of three healthy African lion cubs, an exciting milestone for local conservation.
First-time mother Amirah, a 9-year-old lioness, delivered the cubs on November 23 and 24, caring for them attentively in a private den.
Although a fourth cub born significantly later did not survive, the zoo is thankful for Amirah’s health and the thriving trio.
With African lions classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and human conflict, these births highlight the Detroit Zoo’s dedication to the species’ future.
For now, Amirah and her cubs remain behind the scenes to bond and grow, while the rest of the pride—including father Kalu and aunt Asha—may be seen in the outdoor habitat.
Guests can look forward to meeting the young lions in a few months as the zoo shares more updates and moments from this hopeful chapter. Read More... |
James Vernor, a Detroit pharmacist, invented a distinctive ginger ale in 1866 that became a cherished city tradition.
Legend says Vernor’s original recipe—ginger, vanilla, and spices aged in oak—was discovered after he returned from the Civil War, resulting in the famously bold Vernors Ginger Ale.
He first served it at his pharmacy’s soda fountain, where its unique taste quickly won over locals.
By 1896, Vernor was fully dedicated to ginger ale production, opening a facility on Woodward Avenue that became a Detroit landmark.
The company expanded and its last Detroit plant featured a glass front, delighting onlookers with the bottling in action.
Ownership changed hands in 1966 and, though production left Detroit in 1985, Vernors remains deeply rooted in the city’s culture.
Today, the old plant’s site is home to Studio One Apartments, blending Detroit’s storied past with modern vitality.
Vernors endures as a proud symbol of local resilience and creative spirit. Read More... |
